Freedom Playground Special Event Station (AE4FH)

FreedomPlayground

This is what Freedom Playground used to look like.

We moved to DeLand, Florida a couple of months ago and just down the street from our house was this really cool playground.  This playground was called Freedom Playground and it apparently was pretty famous around here and lots of kids have enjoyed it throughout the years.  It was built by hundreds of volunteers in 1992 and they built the whole thing in just five days.  Well, it turns out that it was really old and starting to fall apart, so a bunch of people tore down the old park and they are building a new playground for kids to use.

A bunch of people are helping rebuild the playground. We got this picture from the Freedom Playground Facebook page. Click on the picture to go to the Facebook page.

There are lots of volunteers out helping to build and we wanted to see if we could help by providing communications for the leaders.  The leaders were excited about the possibility of having kids with Ham Radio help with the project, but there was a “little” problem…  It seems that we are not old enough to go inside the construction zone.  We still wanted to do something to help with the project, so our Daddy suggested that we might be able to do a Special Event station to help let other people know about Freedom Playground and what all the volunteers are doing.  That sounded like it would be fun and that it would be great practice for when we do the K1D Field Day next year, so we decided to do it.

We are on the air!

We will be operating as AE4FH and will be limited to 20 meters Phone for this event today.  We are using our Yaesu FT-897D transceiver and a Silver Tip Antennas 20 meter 1/4 wave ground plane vertical.  Listen for us and give us a shout.  We will also have a really nice 8.5X11 commemorative certificate for anyone who sends us a QSL card along with a 9X12 SASE and $2.00 to help cover the cost of making the certificates.  (We’re kids without jobs, so we need help printing the certificates.)
